Georgia Tech Hosts Campus Safety Day

Fox Channel 5, Atlanta, GAStaff and students at Georgia Tech will see an increased police presence as the campus hosts its 3rd Annual Campus Safety Day on Friday.

Georgia Tech police and Atlanta police will be showing off their latest technology to keep the campus safe as well as providing several demonstrations.

K-9’s, Georgia Tech’s Equestrian Club and the Atlanta Police Department’s Mounted Patrol, and segways will be on hand.

One of the newest technological devices is the Jacket Guadian. It’s a new mobile safety tool that utilizes the smart 911 systen and GPS technology. A student can access the system from their phone. It has a timer with a way for a student to track and put in their route.

“They hang up, the timer starts. If for any reason they’re unable to deactivate that timer — they fall, have a seizure — whatever they situation may be, then the system will automatically contact emergency services,” said Ga. Tech Crime Prevention Officer Jeff Hunnicut.

Campus officials say nearly 3,000 students have signed up for the new system.

Georgia Tech officials say the event is being held to increase safety awareness on campus.
